Savory Oatmeal

Hey Rebels! This morning I was really feelin like switching up my oatmeal game. I usually go for a sweet bowl and add nuts, berries, seeds, coconut, honey, and peanut butter. Don’t get me wrong, that always is very tasty, but since I’m more of a savory type of person, I wanted to experiment with some savory flavors. This bowl is perfect for breakfast because it’s packed with the nutrition you need to kick start your metabolism in the morning (soluble fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, high quality protein). This bowl was inspired by an amazing oatmeal spot in NYC called OatMeals (OatMeals NYC Menu), so if you’re an oatmeal person, I highly recommend you go there.

Here’s how I made this avocado, basil oatmeal bowl:


  • 1/2 cup Old Fashioned oats
  • 1/4 cup water or milk
  • Avocado
  • 1 Soft boiled egg (recipe in previous post)
  • Fresh basil
  • Hemp seeds
  • Salt and pepper to taste


I rarely actually cook my oatmeal. I use the overnight soaking method to get the oats soft. It’s easier for me, and this way I don’t have to clean any pans. I just fill a jar with 2 parts old fashioned oats, 1 part water or milk, and leave in refrigerator overnight. If I use a big jar, I’ll just eat it for breakfast all week. This way, I don’t have to actually cook anything in the morning. I just pour some out of the jar, and warm it up in the microwave if I want it warm. Super easy!

Top your oatmeal with your desired toppings, and enjoy!


For this bowl, I used avocado, fresh basil from my garden, 1 soft-boiled egg, hemp seeds, salt and pepper. Here’s some other savory topping ideas:
